Slow Down and Simplify

I have been reading a lot of blogs and articles about minimalism and how consumerism is effecting people in first world countries. The more I hear about it, the more I go “holy crap their right, this is getting out of hand!”.

I live in an area that has a lot of wealth due to the oil sands and most people judge each others worth by their possessions and how much money they make. I often see Mom’s pull up somewhere in their giant SUV’s, get out in their designer clothing, their kids are perfectly styled and look like models from a GAP kids commercial, whips out a stroller that cost more than a trip to Mexico and I think “damn, what am I doing wrong?”

The truth and reality is we are ALL effected by consumerism, it is friggen everywhere. “If you get this stuff you will feel better about yourself and people will like you more”. It is in the big box stores that I frequent, on TV, in your celebrity magazines etc. it ridiculous. I bet if I met that fancy Mom I previously described we wouldn’t have anywhere near the same interests and in all honestly she probably wouldn’t give me the time of day, she would look me up and down and judge my Joe Fresh clothing and my kids wearing hand me downs and think she can’t be seen talking to me.

My goal is to simplify and slow down life as much as possible for a family of four. Much of the minimalism blogs I read is a 30-40 year old single person living in 250 square feet, they have the ability to keep things pretty minimal, I bet I could too. But that just isn’t going to work for us, we have two young boys with lots of energy, I am an introvert and need my alone time, and we have two big dogs so I would lose my mind in 250 square feet. I think we have narrowed down our solution is to have some land. Smaller inside, more outside. I have already significantly downsized my wardrobe which was VERY liberating, I highly recommend it to everyone! (I will post my process for this soon).

I guess there are so many ways that we can all simplify what we have and consume to things we really need and love. Live in a house the right size, plan your meals, organize, make instead of buy etc.

I will be periodically posting my journey with this and hope you will follow along and share your thoughts and even your processes to living slower, simpler and with more intent.

Catch Up

Well how is 2016 more than half over already!?

I have been so preoccupied with the new baby and just enjoying being home with my kids this blog was kind of a last thought. But now that I have my 5 month old in somewhat of a routine and currently napping, 3 year old is happily playing with his toys, house chores are as caught up as I care for them to be, so how about some thought sharing.

I have technically been off work for 6 months now and feel so free and grounded it is unbelievable. No more rush to get out the door, throw my kid at someone else to raise while I commute for a ridiculous amount of time to an unfulfilling job.

I make money on maternity leave here in Canada which is wonderful that I can be off for a full year with my wee ones and ironically I am receiving a little less than half of what I usually take home every month and yet we seem to have more¬†money in our bank account. How does that work? Oh right….no cost of childcare, no cost of fuel for commuting, no cost of purchasing work clothes, no mindless spending at the grocery store, no cost of eating out at lunch because I was too busy to make myself something and the list goes on. I have really come to realize how much it costs you to work. Sure your wage might be decent but how much do you spend to keep the job? I’m not saying everyone should quit their jobs and become gypsies but I think if you are going to work (like many of us need to), make sure you do the math. Or find something you are ridiculously passionate about and are okay with spending the dough to make that dream a reality.

Now I need to do some soul searching and finding out what I am truly passionate about and what I would be okay with spending my days doing and ensuring I am fulfilled doing it.

Where to start?
